Music therapy uses music experiences and the relationships that develop through them to promote health and wellbeing. As a Board-Certified Music Therapist (U.S.A.) practising in Singapore since 2005, my practice is evidence-based, i.e. using best available evidence, taking into account the clients’ preferences, and based on my training and expertise.

Music Therapy for our modern times

The stress, anxiety, and isolation experienced by many in recent years has led to a decline in wellbeing, and even severe deleterious health consequences post-Covid-19. However, I believe that the human spirit is resilient. Our human race has the capability to awaken and heal from injury and hurt, and music therapy can support you on your journey of recovery and discovery.

Music is a natural way to reconnect with your heart and with others. Throughout human history, music has existed due to human's need for self-expression and to connect with others. Below are a few common applications of Music Therapy. My Music Therapy practice is drawn from a growing body of music therapy (and related) research, as well as my own clinical experience.

Who may benefit from Music Therapy?

I've always loved music. My parents recount how I would not stop singing at the age of 4 or so, and they did not understand what I was singing. However, they said I sang with conviction and volume! Serendipitously, at the age of 9, a neighbour showed me some tunes on her piano, and that was how I was introduced to Richard Clayderman, and soon after, I started piano lessons. When I stumbled upon music therapy as a major...

Music therapy can be effective and reap significant benefits

but it is not a miracle cure-all. Within the context of the therapeutic relationship, the music therapist starts with rapport building and assessment of the client’s needs and preferences, and subsequently develops and implements an individualised treatment plan, documenting clinical observations for each session. At the end of the treatment course, a progress note is prepared that summarises the client’s progress. Music therapy goals are always health-related and meaningful to the client (and often their family and loved ones). Music therapy is not for entertainment or music mastery. There are other outlets for these purposes, e.g. karaoke, jazz clubs, community choir groups, and music lessons.
