Music Therapy for Autism
Music facilitates communication in children with Autism and more
Music therapy uses “music experiences and the relationships that develop through them to enable communication and expression” (Geretsegger et al., 2022, p. 1). It has been demonstrated that musical cues are more effective than spoken cues, as music is multi-sensorial. Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (or "autistic people") have different needs, ranging from sensory integration, motor coordination, cognitive, communication and social needs that can be addressed by music therapy.
How I helped my former clients with autism
In my clinical experience with children on the spectrum, I’ve seen firsthand how music can be a motivating tool for learning and communication. Parents play an important role in the development of these skills. I’ve included the mother (or the father) in sessions to support her child’s development and communication, where appropriate. I have deeply enjoyed working closely with parents. I’ve met many inspiring parents who never gave up on their child, especially when times were difficult. This is an exciting time to work with children with ASD (and their parents) because we now know more about ASD than ever. Hence, we can do more to support their development so that they may grow up to lead independent and fulfilling lives.
