Understanding Music Therapy
What is music therapy?
You do not need any musical background or training to benefit from music therapy. Musical experiences are uniquely human experiences. Music activates both hemispheres of the brain in a diffuse manner. Regions that are activated by music also have non-musical functions (Crowe, 2004). Therein lies the therapeutic power of music because music can drive these functions, e.g. when the brain has been injured, and is in need of (re)habilitation.
Music is a powerful agent of activation and arousal, and it evokes emotions. When used skilfully by the trained music therapist, it can be used to address emotional needs and facilitate self-expression. Music is a non-verbal means of communication, and where there are no words to speak, music can rise up to the occasion. Music can also promote bonding (parent-child, family-based, work-based team) and social skills.
To quote my former Music Therapy professor, Barbara Crowe (past president of the National Association for Music Therapy, U.S.A.): “(Music therapy) can make the difference between withdrawal and awareness, between isolation and interaction, between chronic pain and comfort — between demoralization and dignity.”
As a Principal Level music therapist with over 18 years of experience, I have witnessed the incredible impact that music therapy can have on individuals of all ages and abilities. Whether you are a manager of a rehabilitation center, a parent with special needs kids, an allied health professional seeking additional support for your client, or an adult child of an elderly individual with late-stage dementia or terminal illness, I strongly advocate for the use of music therapy services.
Music therapy is a holistic approach that can address a wide range of needs, including cognitive and psychological, physical, communication, social, and spiritual well-being. No musical background is required to benefit from this powerful and evidence-based therapeutic modality. By working collaboratively with you or your loved one, I can develop personalized interventions that are engaging, creative, and effective.
I welcome any questions or enquiries about music therapy here. Together, we can create a safe and supportive environment that promotes healing and well-being through the power of music.
